Research

SASI is currently conducting a survey to advocate for a department evaluation survey.

design surveys

We developed two surveys during this process: the context survey and the department evaluation survey.

administer

We partnered with the MUST lab to have a consistent pool of participants.

implement

We aim to implement a yearly department-wide evaluation survey to ensure that departments are meeting the academic expectations of its undergraduate students.

why are we calling for a department evaluation?

  1. Need for broader level-focus on collective undergraduate experience within departments
  2. Need for forms collecting student interest in social justice and equity topics
  3. Need for greater accessibility to information/data of student feedback is limited
  4. Need awareness of surveys distributed/promoted to students.

Context Survey

developed by Kara, Kimberly, and Giselle wiith help from Kayode and Elizabeth.

The context survey was created to provide a baseline for the department evaluation survey. It sought to understand what external factors influence an evaluation of a course/professor. Since many courses can be taken by people outside of that course’s department, course evaluations can be skewed by data from people who are not within that discipline. Similarly, other factors such as professor likability and course difficulty may impact a course’s grade instead of the course itself within the larger department objectives.

The department evaluation survey seeks to provide a holistic view of courses and ensure that they are aligned with the goals of the major/discipline. When students come to UC Irvine, they are expecting an academic environment that will equip them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and opportunities to succeed after college. A department-wide evaluation will ensure that these needs and expectations are being met by students within their own academic discipline.
